Reviews are Revealing: Reading reviews from past guests is one of the best ways to gauge the quality and legitimacy of a listing.[2][3] Look for consistent themes in the feedback. A pattern of negative comments about cleanliness, accuracy, or a non-responsive host should be a major concern.[2] Be suspicious of a flood of recent, vague, or overly enthusiastic positive reviews, as they could be fake.[4]
House Rules and Cancellation Policies: Always read the house rules to understand the host’s expectations regarding things like noise levels, pets, and extra guests.[5] Additionally, familiarize yourself with the cancellation policy, as they can range from flexible to strict.[5][6]
Prioritize Your Safety¶
Your safety is paramount. Take these steps to ensure a secure stay:
Research the Neighborhood: Before booking, research the neighborhood to understand its general safety and proximity to amenities.[3][13] Tools like Google Street View can give you a feel for the area.[3]
Check for Safety Essentials: The listing should indicate the presence of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.[14][15] It’s also wise to check for a fire extinguisher and a first-aid kit upon arrival.[11]
Hidden Cameras: While against Airbnb policy, there have been reports of hidden cameras found in rentals.[9][13] Be aware of your surroundings and check for any unusual items or devices.[13]
Secure the Property: Always lock doors and windows when you leave or go to sleep.[15] You might also consider bringing a portable door lock for added security.[13]
Communicate with the Host¶
Don’t hesitate to communicate with the host before and during your stay.
Ask Questions: If you have any questions or concerns about the property, reach out to the host through the Airbnb messaging system.[11] A responsive and helpful host is a good sign.
Confirm Check-in Details: A few days before your trip, confirm the check-in process with your host.[16] Make sure you have their contact information readily available.[16]
